Being Away

I had 2 very long 12 hour shifts this week.  I love my job but sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on so much at home while I am there.  I know this is the frustration and sadness of every working mom but I'm realizing almost 3 years into motherhood I have not come to terms with my working mom status.  I have been in denial thinking my per-diem status made me more of a stay-at home mom that occasionally works.

This week while at work Will stood up next to Andy holding onto his leg, let go and started standing on his own.  He has been a great stander holding on to things but had not yet had the confidence to let go.  Andy called me at work to share the great news, Will hit another milestone!  I was instantly jealous of Andy being at home and angry that I was at work while he got to share this great feat.  I would have walked out that instant if I could have.

So this week I realized I am a working mom, regardless of the amount of time I leave, I am still missing out on great activities at home.  My children are growing up and changing everyday, and some days I have to miss out on that.  It is so sad but I know it's what I have to do for our family.  How do all you other working mom's deal with being absent for milestones?

  2. Its hard! I have been on both sides. I worked when my daughter was a baby until she was 9 and then had my son,. Now I am a SAHM I missed all dd first, but saw my sons. BUT I can honestly say I appreciated the time with my daughter more because I didnt get a lot and she never had a change to really get under my skin. Hugs. Now following from mom loop follow friday!

  3. I am already following from Mom Loop. I am blessed to stay home. I think my husband misses seeing the things I get to see during the day.

I love the book 5 love languages. Have you seen the 5 love languages for kids book? So good although it doesn't really apply until like 5 years old.

  5. You know I know exactly how you feel. I do sometimes get a little jealous when the kids reach some milestone or do something completely new when Brian is watching them. I think per diem is perfect for me and I may never go back to full time again (Lord willing!). Hang in there I know you're a great mommy!

  8. Hi following from the Mom Loop. I dont know what it feels like to have to work yet. I have been a SAHM since my daughter was born 6 yrs ago. But this might change soon, because I think I might have to go back to work at least part time so that our family can move foward.

  9. I try to focus on the benefits, because yes there are moments we miss. But in the longrun I wouldn't change a thing for myself. I am actually a better mom when I develop and support a part of me that is seperate from my kids. I think it's hardest when they're young but as they get older my hope is they will respect my decision to pursue another part of me, something that brings me satisfaction. Also, I think about the benefit they have of developing a bond with my husband that a lot of dads miss when the mom does it all (if you know what I mean)....

  11. I wish I had some great advice for you, but I don't. I remember being in your shoes and missing out on some of those milestones. You're doing what your family needs you to do and although it's tough, you are doing the right thing. There will be many more firsts in his lifetime so it's not a lost cause. :)
Thanks for stopping by my place. I hope you've had a great weekend. Have a great day.
