Mommy and Me Monday- Crayon Fun

I am a short cut taking mom.  I usually don't do extra work to save things.  I hate stain removal, I would rather just buy new clothes (rather being the stressed word). If Em has an accident I just throw away the panties.  So when I read in Parenting magazine about moms taking broken Crayons and melting them together to save the Crayons, I think they are crazy (Sorry if your one of those mom's, you really are more patient and creative than I am). But for journalistic sake and just plain curiosity I gave it a try.  I wanted to see if it was worth the time and mess created to save some money, not even a lot of money, just a few dollars.  We had no shortage of broken crayons around my house because no matter how fat the crayon may be, two year old strength can always manage to break it into many pieces.

My experiment took up a good portion of my morning.  We unwrapped all the crayons and sorted them by color- basic colors only- orange, yellow, blue and green- no matter what shade.  I melted them in a glass bowl in the oven then poured them into a cookie cuter and let them cool in the fridge.  After only a few minutes in the fridge we were able to pop them out of the cookie cutters and we had shaped crayons.  We made princess shapes because Em is such a little princess and honestly Will doesn't care yet so she wins out, for now.  So now we have 4 shaped crayons in 4 colors instead of many colors in small pieces.  I ended up with CUTE crayons and a bunch of bowls and cookie cutters to wash.  I don't really think it was worth it but maybe she will appreciate it eventually.  They sadly have yet to be colored with because after all that work, she no longer cared about colors.  That's a 2 year old attention span for you!

  2. Super cute Carrie, I saw that same article. Maybe Alyssa and I will tackle this same project today...just to keep up with the Mommy Monday festivities since we can't hang out! :) I am sure that she'll be thrilled to do this although, it would be more fun for Alyssa if we did princess themed too... Maybe I will wait till I can borrow those cookie cutters! LOL! :)

  4. Wow! That's fantastic that you tried it. Sometimes, we do things for our kids just for the fun of it! I'm sure your daughter loved it!
