3 going on 13

This week my oldest sweet terror, Em, who just turned 3 last month, has been a terror. Now, I have been dealing with her crabbiness for a while now but it has reached a new height. This week she did something I don't even know where she got it from.

She was getting into trouble, digging through things I told her to leave alone. So I grabbed her hand and walked her away from the pile of folded laundry. I got down to her level and explained why I don't want her touching and to leave it alone. Then, she proceeded to yell at me, act like she was going to punch me (which she thankfully resisted) and then said "you are so dumb" and ran off to her room slamming the door behind her.

Whao, why am I suddenly catapulted into teen years? I thought I was the mother of a preschooler, not a high schooler. I was planning on prepping myself for my daughters loathing and hatred when she started her period or junior high, whichever came first. There was no prepping myself for a three year old telling me off and calling me names.

So now we have been taking things away, movies and games are gone, hidden even from view. Next it will be toys. I feel like then I'm going to have to go for the car keys and cell phone, oh wait, she's 3. Just taking that stuff away improved her attitude drastically.

What do you do when your kids act up?

  1. Oh Lord...I feel for you...I too have a 3 1/2 yr old girl as well as a 16 month old girl (other kids are boys). I have not yet seen what exactly you are going thru but she is starting to say NO a lot and never did before....

We just take things away, it works for us. Hoping it continues to work...

Keeping my fingers crossed that your situation improves!

  2. I know exactly how you feel, my daughter just turned 3 in June, and she has two older brothers, and she is a quick learner. Needless to say, she has her 8 and 7 year old brothers attitudes!! I simply can not imagine what she'll be like in 10 years!
The boys hate cleaning their room...I finally had enough of it this past January, and when they were at school one day, I completely cleared their room of toys...everything except books!! They have slowly earned some of their toys back, but some are still down in the basement...those that have not...are going to donation!!

  3. Hello! I'm a new follower; I found your blog via mommietime's discussion link love.

Aww! My goodness, that must be so upsetting to have her acting that way. My son is only six months, but I'm already seeing his upcoming wild personality. I am so nervous as to the shenanigans that he'll put me through! I like your form of punishment though. I'm glad it's working for you! I'll be doing that as discipline as well.

You have a beautiful blog! I look forward to reading more! :)

  4. I can relate kinda sorta... My only son just turned 1 in August. Since we brought him home he has been so easy going & very easy to adapt to new routines or situations. However, his Daddy just got home from Afghanistan last week & my kid has been a Holy Terror since. Crying over every little "No" & ignoring every little "Leave that alone". I, being as though I'm not used to it, am about to pull all of my hair out. Good thing he can't talk yet or I'm sure it'd be that much worse.
